The Willow Street Fire Company in Willow Street, PA was awarded a US Department of Homeland Security AFG (Assistance to Fire Fighers Grant) grant to install On-Scene Xplorer in their apparatus.
“Willow Street has one of the largest retirement communities in Pennsylvania and is also experiencing residential and commercial growth. These pressures require the department have more information when they respond to calls”, said John Fix, president of Iron Compass. “The area outside of Willow Street is very rural, and sadly every year there are barn fires. OSX will be a big help navigating to those mutual aid calls.”
The installation will include Panasonic Toughbook-30 fully rugged computers mounted in their two engines, truck, rescue, and chief’s vehicles. Willow Street also plans to have Iron Compass pre-plan the large multi-building, multi-location retirement community.

Deepwater Fire Department and Pennsville Fire & Rescue Co #1, both within Pennsville Township in Salem County, New Jersey installed On-Scene Xplorer systems in their fire apparatus. The installed systems included Toughbook computers from Panasonic, external GPS receivers, mounting hardware and power supply wiring in the cabs of engine, ladder truck, and command vehicles.
On-Scene Xplorer will enhance the operations of the departments by giving the crews the ability to easily find dispatched locations with updated spatial data over the traditional and outdated papers maps that were used in the cabs. Iron Compass will enhance the system by providing quarterly mapping database updates and by extracting fire hydrant locations from engineering CAD drawings to be included in the On-Scene Xplorer system.
The two departments provide emergency response for a first due area over 24 square miles with a population of approximately 15,000.
Iron Compass release On-Scene Xplorer version 2.5 today The version 2.5 includes many enhancements and upgrades. “We want to thank those departments that have provided important feedback to us about how they use OSX and what enhancements they would like to see,” said John Fix, President of Iron Compass. “We worked hard to make sure the new and enhanced features improve the work of emergency responders and are not just ‘gee wiz’ add-ons. Plus, new features have to be easy to use and understand so the training curve is the absolute minimum.”
New installations being shipped will include the new version 2.5. All existing customers are being provided access to the new version as an upgrade as well.
